Food (drinks) Styling: Have you seen my splashes?

tanquerayI was asked by a client if I had experience with styling an action shot of liquid splashing in a glass.
*cough*
Well yes sir, I do. I confidently replied ! And I have a few useful tips to go along with that experience I thought to myself.

Here they are folks, 5 tips on styling liquids for splashes and pours

1. HAVE ENOUGH GLASSES OR JUGS.
Usually with food it is advisable to have at least two of the same plate or dish per recipe or item you are styling. For these types of shots I recommend at least 6 of every container.
You have to wash, dry and scrumptiously polish the glasses in between each shot, which is time consuming and laborious. Better to have a few lined up.

 2. DON’T BE PRECIOUS
Glasses get broken! Throwing solid ice cubes into a fine crystal glass often results in causalities, and another reason to have more than one hero glass.

3. PREPARE FOR THE MESS.
Stock up on paper towel. Put down a shower curtain or drip sheet on the floor. Wear a plastic apron. Yip, I said plastic, the disposable kind you can rip off and chuck when you get soaked. Coz you will.

4. MAKE/ BUY SUFFICIENT PRODUCT
Whether milk, fruit juice or a cocktail you will require more than a standard glass full. Be prepared with enough product for a number of shots, plenty gets wasted splashing.

5. BE PATIENT
It might happen that you get the perfect splash on the first take. Often not!

Have fun!
